Dragons in ancient civilizations
The oldest known term for dragon appears in ancient Mesopotamia, in the area of present-day Iraq – "ushum-gal". This term, originating from the Sumerian language, means "great serpent" and refers to a mythological creature combining the characteristics of a serpent and a lion. Sumerian texts indicate that the ushum-gal was a symbol of power and protection, often associated with deities and kings as a sign of their authority and strength.
